Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis; It is a disease that occurs as a result of abnormal bone formation in the middle ear. If this new bone formation begins to prevent the transmission of sound to the inner ear, which is the main hearing organ, hearing loss occurs in the patient.⠀ ⠀ Otosclerosis is a genetic disease and it is known that parents with Otosclerosis have a 51% chance of passing the disease on to their children.⠀ ⠀ Otosclerosis Symptoms⠀ ⠀ The main symptom of otosclerosis is hearing loss. Hearing loss may occur in a single ear or may affect both ears. ⠀ ⠀ • Slowly progressive hearing loss⠀ • Tinnitus⠀ • Balance problems⠀ • Dizziness⠀ • Increase in hearing loss during pregnancy⠀ ⠀ How is otosclerosis diagnosed?⠀ ⠀ The medical history of the patients is among the findings that facilitate diagnosis during the physical examination that must be performed by the Ear Nose and Throat physician. ⠀ ⠀ Otosclerosis should be considered if the eardrum is normal during the examination, the patient does not have a history of otitis media or trauma, and conductive hearing loss is detected in the hearing test. ⠀ ⠀ Sometimes additional examination methods such as computed tomography may be required. ⠀ ⠀ In some cases, in order to reach a definitive diagnosis, it may be necessary to surgically open the middle ear and observe the middle ear structures and the entrance to the inner ear, called the oval window.⠀ ⠀ How is otosclerosis treated?⠀ ⠀ There is no drug treatment for otosclerosis. In cases where the disease progresses to the inner ear and surgery cannot be performed, Fluoride treatment can be given to stop the progression of hearing loss.⠀ Patients can use hearing aids. However, this method does not stop the progression of the disease and requires lifelong use. ⠀ ⠀ It can be treated with surgery at the stage when surgical intervention is determined for treatment. This surgery is called “stapedotomy”. In surgery; The stirrup ossicle, whose movement is restricted due to otosclerosis, is removed and replaced with a prosthesis.
