Meniere’s Disease

Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disease that can cause dizziness (vertigo), tinnitus, a feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear, and hearing loss.⠀ ⠀ Nausea, vomiting, palpitations, diarrhea, sweating and fear of death may be added to dizziness. Some of these symptoms may be confused with panic attacks. Dizziness begins suddenly and can last from 20 minutes to 24 hours. However, it usually ends in under 2 hours.⠀ ⠀ In the early stages of the disease, hearing loss recovers after dizziness attacks, but in later years, hearing loss may become permanent after the attack. ⠀ ⠀ There is no single study that definitively diagnoses Meniere’s disease. A specialist Ear-Nose-Throat physician will evaluate the patient history, physical examination, the entire clinical picture and test results together to reach a diagnosis.⠀ ⠀ History of symptoms is very important in diagnosing Meniere’s disease. Vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus may not always occur at the same time. Special tests may be needed to make the diagnosis; ⠀ ⠀ • Hearing Test (Audiometry),⠀ • Balance Test (Electronismography and VEMP),⠀ • Inner Ear or Cochlear Test,⠀ • Blood tests; It may be among the tests necessary to rule out other possible conditions.⠀ ⠀ Meniere’s Disease may be thought to be triggered by immune reactions, metabolic disorders within the inner ear, inner ear infections or trauma, possible allergic conditions, and other injuries to the inner ear.
