Unusual Physical Appearances of Ears

Protruding ears do not cause any symptoms other than the unusual physical appearance of the ears; It occurs when the antihelical fold of the ear is inadequate and/or the turbinate (concave part of the ear) is too deep. This is a prominent ear deformity that causes the ears to appear more protruding than normal. Protruding ear deformity may be seen in one or both ears. If the prominent ear disorder is noticed at birth, it is tried to be treated without surgery by molding and taping methods in the first three months, but these treatments fail because the cartilage reaches sufficient hardness after the third month. After this, it is necessary to perform prominent ear correction surgery (otoplasty). Protruding ears can be a subject of ridicule, especially in childhood. This causes the child with prominent ears to be psychologically affected in his social environment, causing his self-confidence to break down. In other words, the results of prominent ear deformity are evaluated sociologically and psychologically. The age for prominent ear treatment is around 5 – 6 years old, which is the period when ear development is completed. It is recommended to perform the operation at an early age in order to prevent psychological effects that may occur in the child’s social life and/or school period.
