Hearing Ability

Hearing ability is important for children to develop speech and language skills as they grow. The child learns to recognize and imitate sounds through hearing, thus completing his language development. A child with hearing loss’s ability to receive danger warnings, social development, academic success and psychological state are affected. Early diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss is of great importance in this regard.⠀ ⠀ Symptoms of hearing loss in children;⠀ ⠀ • Listening to television, radio and computer louder than normal or closer,⠀ • Frequent middle ear infections,⠀ • Difficulty in hearing certain sounds and determining the direction of the sound,⠀ • Difficulty hearing in noisy environments,⠀ • Better response to loud sounds,⠀ • Speech being loud or very low,⠀ • Stress disorders in speech.⠀ ⠀ 1- Conductive hearing loss ⠀ ⠀ Disorders that may cause hearing loss in the outer or middle ear; ⠀ ⠀ • Ear infections (otitis media)⠀ The most common cause of hearing loss in childhood is due to fluid accumulation in the middle ear called serous otitis media, which develops due to frequent upper respiratory tract infections. ⠀ ⠀ • Earwax (cerumen)⠀ The dirt in the ear canal turns into an earplug and prevents sound waves from reaching the eardrum. ⠀ ⠀ • Inflammation of the outer ear (otitis externa) ⠀ Another common condition that affects the outer ear canal is otitis externa. ⠀ ⠀ 2- Sensorineural hearing loss⠀ ⠀ Damage to the inner ear is called sensorineural hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss may be congenital, genetic, or acquired (i.e., disease, exposure to loud noise, trauma, etc.). ⠀ ⠀ 3- Mixed type hearing loss⠀ ⠀ Sometimes a combination of factors affecting both the outer or middle ear and the inner ear (cochlea) occurs, resulting in mixed hearing loss.⠀ ⠀ If you have any suspicion of hearing loss in your child, it is recommended that you immediately consult an ENT specialist.
