Lip Cancer

Lip cancer is a type of head and neck cancer that begins in the epithelial cells of the lip. It can occur anywhere along the upper or lower lip. It is most commonly seen on the lower lip.⠀ ⠀ Risk Factors:⠀ ⠀ • Heavy alcohol use⠀ • Smoking or using tobacco products⠀ • Harmful effects of the sun⠀ ⠀ Other risk factors for lip cancer include:⠀ ⠀ • Being a man⠀ • Having light colored skin⠀ • Prolonged exposure to sunlight⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Signs and Symptoms⠀ ⠀ The most common symptom of lip cancer is a non-healing wound on the lips.⠀ ⠀ • A lump or visible thickening on the lips⠀ • Painful or numb lips⠀ • Bleeding on the lip⠀ • Tension caused by swelling in the jaw⠀ ⠀ Treatment Methods;⠀ ⠀ Surgery: Surgery is performed to remove lip cancer and some of the healthy tissue surrounding it. Lip cancer surgery may also involve removing cancerous lymph nodes in the neck.⠀ ⠀ Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy for lip cancer may be used on its own or after surgery. Radiation may be directed only to your lip or the lymph nodes in your neck.
