External ear canal inflammation is a bacterial or mycotic (fungal) infection of the skin of the external ear canal. ⠀ ⠀ It is also known as swimmer’s ear because it usually occurs after long-term exposure to water. ⠀ ⠀ Causes of External Ear Canal Inflammation⠀ ⠀ As a result of frequent swimming in the sea and the pool in the summer, the protective acidic layer of the external ear canal is destroyed and the reproduction of bacteria and fungi becomes easier. ⠀ ⠀ The most common cause of external ear canal inflammation is the development of a suitable environment for the growth of bacteria and fungi, which are transmitted from outside after water leaks into the ear and through foreign object manipulations such as ear cotton. Other reasons include;⠀ ⠀ • Exposure of the external ear canal to hair dye and hair spray,⠀ • Damage to the external ear canal skin or injury for any reason during ear washing and earwax removal,⠀ • Eczema and seborrheic dermatitis conditions of the external ear canal can be considered.⠀ ⠀ Symptoms of External Ear Canal Inflammation⠀ ⠀ • Initial ear itching and ear pain that increases with touching the auricle⠀ • Feeling of congestion⠀ • Ear discharge⠀ • Fire⠀ • Pain reflected in the face, neck and temple area, increasing with jaw movements⠀ • Appearance of painful lymph nodes in the neck near the patient’s ear⠀ ⠀ Treatment of External Ear Canal Inflammation⠀ ⠀ First of all, it is very important to clean the discharge and epithelial residues in the external ear canal Depending on the degree of edema in the external auditory canal, antibiotic ear drops should be started and daily canal cleaning should be done. If the external ear canal is so edematous that the drops cannot be removed, cotton wicks containing edema solvents and antibiotics may need to be placed in the ear canal. This is a painful procedure, but it is a very effective treatment method. In addition, oral antibiotic therapy and painkillers should be used regularly.
